well, you guys had more car fun with young life than i did.  at a young life meeting in victoria estates our junior year (evening meeting) i accidentally ran across the middle of a neighbor's front yard on my way out with a carload of equally stupid people who will remain annonymous (did i spell that right?) [Bill Bowen not Andy Chambers].  this neighbor was out of the house and tracking me before i could get away.  he got my license plate number and my dad got my driver's license for 6 months! 6 months!  I should have been shot!! i think i turned agnostic for a while, but i got over it!

comment by Phyllis Houston Teel

I will never forget spending the night at Penny Calhouns house and sneaking out in her brothers car (stick shift) and Susan driving.  Did she know how to drive a stick shift?  No.  That was a looooong time ago, but can still laugh about it.

comment by Susan Winfrey Smith

I was lucky enough to be able to reconnect with Susan last summer. We had wonderful conversations over the phone about our lives since highschool. I know she had been in ill health but she still had that spark of joy and humor in her voice.   I remember our senior year, when we were to play Druid Hills and Susan came up with the most incredible idea. She presented the idea....the whole student body would be behind the field out of sight when people started coming for the game. Druid Hills would wonder why there was no turn out....then we would all come marching in around the field carrying blue and white balloons. They way she told it was so awesome, she was a master with words and so enthusiastic. I will miss her and she will always hold a special place in my heart.

Greetings from the Mill! I would like to invite everyone to the Third Annual Stacks Holiday Loft and Artists Tour. The dates are December 4th and 5th.  Visit our website at www.thestackslofttour.com for times and information on the Tour.

I just found out about this website today.  Sorry I didn't know about recent multi-class get-togethers.  I would have tried to attend.  But now I know and it has been a lot of fun reading about everyone and the memories.  My brother Richard "Dickey" was class of '68.  Many of you may know, but some do not, that he passed away on New Year's eve of 2007.  He would have loved this site and I am sorry that he did not get a chance to re-connect with his fellow classmates.  Great website guys.  I would like to check back periodically to catch up on everyone's activities.  Take care!

comment by Susan Winfrey Smith

I am glad to see that this site is still up.  The reunion was oh so wonderful, but as it has been said, not nearly long enough. I would like to thank all the committee members for the absolutely great job and everyone who came and a special thank you to all the spouses who graciously and bravely attended.                                                                                                        Soon the leaves will be falling...any word on the next get together? You guys are great.Susan

comment by Jim Meek

Random memories: No one has mentioned that "computer dance" (match.com version 0.001)? We filled out some sort of forms and weeks later we arrived to find out that all the guys' ideal date was Jan Thibedeau. Not many will share this one, but several of us were at the state science fair in Athens when Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed in Memphis. We were staying in an, um, inexpensive motel in a part of town. I recall Mrs. Prescott being pretty worried (probably a lot more than she let on). Any other veterans of 5th period chemistry remember how Mr. Abernathy's demonstrations would work until our period?

comment by Ricky Corless

Well, we had some good news today!  Rachel Counts will be joining us Saturday night.  How cool is that!  So now we know Coach Frank Hixon, Coach  RayHambrick, Coach Cookie Ramos and Mrs Betty Lou Davis Clark will be there!  Hopefully we'll see a few more Teachers names surface on the Sneak Preview page.  Give a shout out to all of those wonderful people that put up with us!

Bobby R.I used to go to the Spot or the Electric Eye almost every Friday night. I also wore Angel Flight WIDE bell bottom pants (when I had a 28 inch waist).  Needless to say, I have neither the moves nor the 28 inch waist anymore.

comment by jane wallace reed

OMG Bobby,  I remember all three of the teen clubs!  I haven't thought of those in ages.  I remember seeing Paul Revere and the Raiders at one of them. Also remember John Fristoe giving me a ride in "Festus" on I85 after school one day.  That car was FAST!  One more memory....the apt. on Delmont Dr. in Buckhead.  How is Tripp doing?  Can't wait to see you and John and hear some music.

comment by Bobby Rogers

OK....I am remembering some other semi-interesting stuff while I am sitting here....Weejuns - surgically altered to make slip on sandals...that was cool.  Trying to go the entire day without socks without getting caught...a major guy-related accomplishment.  The stairwells in D Hall...I used to hang out with Carol Allen ('67)  and talk (yes talk).  The Waffle House at Claremont and I-85.  A waffle, 2 eggs and milk...$1.35.And for all of the Baron football crowd...the initiation rite of Atomic Balm (think IcyHot) in the jock strap and limberger cheese in the helmet.  You haven't lived until your crotch is on fire and your helmet smells like vomit on a 95 degree August day...OK that was gross...I admit it...but it's all part of the colorfull BHS history.Does anyone remember The Spot or The Electric Eye?  How about The Comic Book Club?  All teen clubs during our time.  How about those dances at the LaVista Women's Club.? I remember The Prophets hosting some of those (if your band doesn't have a gig...just throw your own dance!) About the 3rd time the Synagogue yard next door was covered with beer cans that was the end of that....ha ha!Lord have mercy, I haven't thought of this stuff in ages!BR

comment by Bobby Rogers

OK, so someone asked about me rounding up "the Prophets"....here's the good news and the bad news....Bad news....I haven't seen nor spoken with Dennis Barnes nor Steve Hill since the early early 70's...I don't even know if they are alive.   Clyde McClintock, who was our drummer is still kicking around somewhere as I heard from him indirectly a couple of years ago.The good news...both John Fristoe and i will be at the reunion and as I understand it John is bringing a couple of his acoustic guitars...so maybe just maybe we can do a little "Prophets" unplugged.  I can be easily bribed with Kettle One or Maker's Mark.  See y'all at the pool!Bobby

alumni of w.d. thompson elementary (actually "thomson" with no "p" may be the original/correct spelling, much to my own surprise) may be interested to visit a site put up by doug stott, who was i think 3 yrs ahead of us. http://wdthomson.blog4ever.com/blog/index-203335.html click on "diaporama" and then "lecture automatique" and you'll see a slide show of 30+ pix of the school's demolition in 1976. i think we always regarded the original building as an ancient structure even back in the 50's. yet the school first opened in 1929, so it "only" stood for 47 years before being torn down. (and... how old are we...?) doug has said it took him a while to get around to having the film developed, and it didn't fare well in storage, so you'll have to pardon the occasional overlay of organic growth.

Bobby,I remember Festus. That was one fine "55 Chevy. 327 magnificent cubic inches of displacement from a naturally aspirated 4 barrel Holly carburetor.  Well that's what produced the classic torque and acceleration in our era. Also rolled and pleated interior if I remember correctly. Are you still in touch with Fristo? If so how's he doing?Mike

comment by Gary Brooks

Looking forward to seeing everyone again.I went to my brothers reunion last year and caught up with a lot of old Barons and it was a lot of fun.Does anyone remember rolling Coach Rentz house late one night and him running out of his house in his pj's as we jumped in the back of someones station wagon as he chased us down the street .He was pretty fast.g It seems like Mike Chase was in that group but can't remember who else.Heck ,I have a hard time keeping up with what day it is at this time in my life.See everyone soon.

comment by Mike Allison

Car tag. That was a blast! I remember cutting through that easement Ben was talking about several times in my old Falcon station wagon.Since I lived on Leafmore, I could duck into my driveway to escape persuit.

I remember (at least I think I do): - The spiritual side of Young Life - Jumbo lunches in the cafeteria for only $.55 - Stunt Night (hey, consistant 2nd place isn't so bad)  - Circle pins (still don’t know which side means what) - Those rip-cord dresses - After school fights at the little league field - The weekend the stadium light posts were loosened and fell - Gatlinburg ski trip (without snow) - First beer (thanks Lynn Farmer) - Pep week - 8-tracks - Motorcade to away football games - “Little Bunny Foo-Foo” - Tornado lookouts stationed on the stadium - Basketball tournament games at Tech’s Dome - “Affirmation Vietnam” counter-protest at the Atlanta Stadium - Pele playing soccer in Atlanta - Cigar nights with ‘the guys’ - “Grub Day” our precursor to casual Fridays - Gas was only $.25 - Miss Counts

comment by Andy Chambers

Car tag. If I remember correctly, one car was "it" and the other cars tried to catch him - block him so that he couldn't move.  Hence the power easement was a discovered escape route. It was always played in Leafmore  because it was a  large, but contained space.

comment by Amy Shulman Haney

David, here's a secret:  my mom got so fed up with paying the price of those Villagers (and anyone who was in Sociology class with me knows ALL about my crazy mom!!), that she actually made me FAUX Villagers!  Oh, the shame!  And Susan, maybe if I got my mom to sew two of those suckers together I could fit in them, but that's about the only way!

comment by David Dyer

Bobby, is it too late for you to "round up" the remaining band members for reunion entertainment? The Prophets--a truly awsome band. Ben, how did the car tag work--and not sure where that easement is--leafmore hills?

comment by Steve Lewis- Class of 70

Congrats on your 40th reunion. No, I wasn't in your class but I did know many of you.... especially the basketball players. David Dyer, Ben Jones, and some  of you may remember me as manager of the basketball team (Jobko).  For some unknown reason I was given that nickname. It was probably because I wore a Falcons jersey with Bill Jobko's number (is he still around). You ought to have a great time and judging from some of the posts, we may need a few hall monitors. Regards!

comment by Dan (Corky) Corcoran

I'm Betty Corcoran's brother (she was '67, I was '63).  The class of 1963 was the first to graduate after attending all 5 years at Briarcliff.  (The class of 1962 was the first to graduate from Briarcliff, but they attended 8th grade at Druid Hills HS and then four years at Briarcliff). There was some discussion of the school colors on this site.  From the beginning, the school colors were blue and silver.  Our first yearbook had those colors on the cover.  (Maroon and gold may have been the Druid Hills colors?)Dan

I have recently retired from the IT industry. My wife Melanie (BHS 1976) is also retired so we can spend more time at our vacation home on Lake Hartwell near Fair Play, SC. We live most of the time in Atlanta near Northlake Mall not far from "Spaghetti Junction." I have two grown step-daughters who, in turn, have two children each. My parents are both deceased. I have one sibling, a brother Tom who went to Druid Hills HS and now lives on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. Melanie and I have two Beagles and we are active with the Atlanta Beagle Rescue organization. Melanie loves to quilt using a commercial-grade automated quilting machine and I like to putter around with music. I love attending Georgia Tech football and basketball games, notwithstanding that I have two degrees from Georgia State University.

comment by Susan Winfrey Smith

David, word has it that Amy can still fit into those villager outfits...disqusting. Not really sure about those "Pappogolo (???) flats".

comment by Mike Rodgers

Anybody remember Bobby Rogers maroon Ford Falcon?

comment by Jennie McCorvey Fleming, class 72

Does anyone remember an actual suit of armor next to the main trophy case and next to the door to B-hall?  Several members of the class of '68, '71, '72, and '73 have asked me if I remember it.  I don't recall ever having seen a suit of armor at Briarcliff, otherwise we would have seen it in the yearbooks and it would have been a "celebrity" of many pranks.  Just curious...........

comment by Ben Jones

David.  CAR TAG!!  What a great game.  Invented, I believe, by Terry Simmons.  By the way, Terry and Ann (Laney), if you happen to be eavesdropping on this web site, sign up.  We would all love to see you both.  Back to car tag, do you remember a power easement near Alice Holley's house where you could hop the curb and cut over to another street.  Great escape move!

comment by Bobby Rogers

Well I remember it well....but it was John Fristoe who had the boss hog...he had a '55 Chevy named "Festus" that had all the goodies, bored out 327, big Holly 4 bbl carb...we got nailed up for drag racing on Claremont  Road right in front of the VA Hosptial (90 mph in a 45 zone).  Cost Fristoe his license for 90 days and he couldn't take his bad ride to Daytona...so Gene Hardeman drove instead.  HA HA!See everyone next weekend.....BobbyStill a Southern Boy at heart!

comment by David Dyer

Amy, word has it the you still have a few of those villager skirts & blouses.  Are you really gonna wear a few of those for the reunion?  I sure hope so!  By the way, how much does it cost to re-sole a pair of Pappagolo flats?

comment by Tricia Gaston

Hi, I know everyone wants to call me Pat, and that’s fine! I will answer to just about anything! But after 50 years I must admit that I hated being called Pat, as far back as my WD Thompson days. I was just too shy to say anything about it! But i’m Okay with it now and you can call me PAT!%uD83D%uDE44 whatever you call me I can’t wait for the 24th to get here so thatwe can in fact, sit down, chat and catch up. Some of you know, but not all, that I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in December, year 2000. Since the 40th reunion, I have in fact declined. Some days are great, some days are very difficult .  I have thankfully maintained a can do attitude about this, and a good sense of humor. You may very well see me with a walker, but where there is music I am known for making my walker my dance partner! I look forward to sitting a while but also perhaps engaging in what I call Walker Dance Aerobics. See you in about two weeks! “Tricia”

I had one date with Susan. It was a day date. We were going to Lanier with a bunch of other people and she and I were following them to the boat. We got separated and never made it to right dock. After much searching we headed back home. We were on Buford Highway, in an undeveloped stretch and Susan suggested that we pull off and just chill. We did. We sat on this grass hill above the highway and watched the cars go by, talked about crazy stuff, and kissed and hugged for a while. She had more energy than anyone I had ever met before. RIP Susan.

comment by Lynne Waller

One funny memory that I have of Susan is that she had a "logo" that she used quite a lot.  It was a drawing of an avocado plant and she named it "Arthur".  I have no idea what an avocado plant looks like, but I assume her drawing was accurate.  For a wedding gift she gave me a "Harvest Gold" kitchen pot (remember how popular that color was???) and she had painted her Arthur plant on the front of the pot.  I used that pot for probably 20  years and always thought of her when I used it.  I remember her as being very creative and gifted with the written word.  I also viewed her as fearless.  I wish she could have joined us at some of our reunions.

comment by ALICE HOLLEY DUNCAN

That is such a coincidence--and funny that my memory is of the same...... plant--wow! She had an avacado plant growing on her front porch and one day when walking by her house on Leafmore (a street over from me), she showed it to me--I thought what an exotic plant--I dont even know what this is. I always did think she was very unique. I am so sorry and sad she is gone.

comment by Stephanie Tiffin Yearwood

I remember Susan as being an extremely bright and funny girl! She was someone to admire since good grades and popularity seem to come so easily. I have many fond memories of her, but one seems to stand out more than others. At one of our spend the night parties at Penny Calhoun’s house, it was a tradition to get out the Noxzema for an evening facial and then roll our hair before retiring to bed. Susan used the “largest rollers” I have ever seen in my life. Thank goodness they were plastic! If they had been metal, ET would never have been able to call home! Susan and Penny, rest in peace knowing you both will be missed.

comment by Cheryl Cartledge Cruickshank

I was hoping to find that there was a reunion being planned. Thanks to all involved.  I will be available to help in May, if you need me.

comment by Jim Mozley

Ben, I remember the classic Dyer door blocking move. That became a favorite tactic. I also remember Mark Mile's [class of '69] model 'T' being in the race one morning. We snuck out during the closing YL prayer to get the lead, because top speed was about 38. We held both doors open and did a zig-zag maneuver, but we were eventually overtaken. Do you remember car tag in 11th grade? And Mike Chase... what about that poor fellow Bush? { not the pres.] Jim

comment by Mike Chase

I remember the YL races too.  I can still see a crossing guard's huge eyes as our car slid past her one morning.  Apparently, she underestimated the speed limit on N. Druid Hills.  Thankfully, Mozley must have been driving since we missed her.

comment by Amy Shulman Haney

Ok, enough of this silly "guy" stuff.  Girls, who remembers the mandatory "uniform" of Villager dresses, Weejun loafers and John Romaine pocketbooks?  My poor parents - I drove them crazy until I got all the appropriate attire!

I just finished looking through my 1967 year book (can't find 1968). The things people write!  Sandy wrote: Someday when you are old and ancient - about 40 - you will look back at this page and remember all we've done - or maybe it's all the things we shouldn't have done...one of these days when we are both married and have hundreds of children - get our your annual and relive our high school days but never forget me. And Amy wrote: I know we'll be friends for a long time after this and if it seems that all the silly things we've done become insignificant  - don't let them them, because they all amount to something many people don't have and that's a friend like you. This made me realize that after 40 years we still remember and we still treasure all those days we had together at BHS. Great times - Great People. We Rock. Can't wait!!!

I just found this website, thanks to Turk McKinnon's email regarding the passing of Pat Lovett.  Sorry to hear it, my prayers for the family. This is such a stroll down memory lane! And reading the comments from my brother, Jim, were very enlightening.  I was away at Birmingham Southern College his senior year and had NO IDEA about the shenanigans he mentioned.  But I'm not at all surprised! BHS years were wonderful for Susie, Jim and me -- great memories and friends. Hope to make it to a reunion soon. Linda

I have such fond memories of Coach Ramos and a short story to tell. We were at football practice one day and Coach Ramos was a new coach. We were doing tackling drills and a guy hurt is shoulder.  My team mate was on the ground and Coach Ramos comes running up and get down on his kness and starts yelling into the teammates ear. "Do you believe in Coach Ramos" Do you believe in Coach Ramos" and the guy stands up and start yelling back at Coach Ramos " Yes, I believe in Coach Ramos" Coach Ramos said " I can't hear you, Do you believe in Coach Ramos" and my teammate said almost screaming " Yes, I believe in Coach Ramos" and Coach Ramos says " Your Healed, get back in line." I think about Coach Ramos and smile, he did have such an impact on my life, it was wonderful to be able to talk with him at our reunion.  I loved Coach Ramos and will miss him. Mike
